[Pterraforming Crossover] Of Bats and Pterosaurs

Description

Was originally be called "Of Spacebats and Pterrestrialsaurs", but unfortunately there's a character limit in the title. Anyways, when I came across WorldBuildersInc's alien space bats, the Eeloks, I just had to draw them. So I thought it would be fun to do a crossover; my membranous wing-walking Homopteranus unlikelus with his membranous wing-walking Eeloks. Plus it was a good excuse to display some of the technology/gear of H. unlikelus I had been working on. Unfortunately I couldn't include more on the Eeloks as far as gear, as it hasn't been described to my knowledge. Their gear would probably resemble that of the H. unlikelus shown here, and like them clothing would be out of the question. With the way the wing membranes are shaped it would make it impossible for them to wear conventional clothing. They could, however, strap something between their neck and legs, a belly cover essentially (which is what the two H. unlikelus are wearing here). I drew the feet in a landing position in both species, as this would be the most efficient means of landing. Once the wings are planted on the ground they can switch to bearing weight on them instead, freeing the feet. Otherwise they would have to crash land on their wings, somehow folding them just before hitting the ground. somehow with those hollow bones it doesn't seem like a good idea.

I'd like to eventually draw a line up of all the arm/wing-walkers I can find; it's an interesting concept and should be done more often.

To the right, we have the spacefaring Eeloks, a space-fairing extraterrestrial psudo-tetrapod resembling both earth bats and marsupials. To the right, we have the much larger, terrestrial, realm-jumping Homopteranus unlikelus, the largest flying and most intelligent extant pterosaur of the Pterrarian realm. Both grounded individuals are male, while both the airborne species are female. Both species here are interesting, as in addition to their human level of sentience and sapience, they also are flying animals who walk about on their wings, using their feet and legs like arms/hands.

[Somewhat] brief overveiw of Homopteranus unlikelus:
Homopteranus unlikelus is a terrestrial species, although lives in a realm where pterosaurs and dinosaurs are still dominant. Standing over ten feet (~3.05m) in males and seven feet (~2.13m) in females, H. unlikelus is the largest living species of pterosaur that retains full flying capabilities. They are also the smartest, with intelligence that rivals or even surpasses that of their human counterparts. H. unlikelus, and all other ptreranosimains, are unique in that they walk about on their wings, their feet free for manipulation. Aside from males being larger than females, the sexes display other forms of sexual dimophism, including a larger crest on the males, longer hair like pycnofibrils on the back of the head in females, a "bridge" at the base of the beaks of males, wider pelvises in females, and so on and so forth. Both sexes are quite colorful, although their patterns differ between them. They are a cathermal species in nature, and have exceptional eyesight and sharp hearing. They have no sense of smell and a very poor sense of taste, however. All pteranosimians, including H. unlikelus, are fully viviparious, and give birth to an average of one to two live young. The young (called flaplings or flappecks) have fully developed wings, and can cling and fly shortly after birth. They remain with the parents until they are six years of age, at which point many go off to find mates, and, in modern society, find and intern in careers

Native to the redwood forests of the north american coast, they are expert climbers, and live high off the ground away from most terrestrial predators. A highly gregarious species, they naturally form flocks that can number in the tens of thousands, although the concentrations are higher in developed areas. While most families live out in the open, many reside in aerial shelters, which are tall, cylindrical structures built from adobe or wood. H. unlikelus mate for life, and have extremely strong pair bonds, with pairs rarely venturing out of eyesight of each other. In modern society, pairs are even hired together, and are much more likely to get a job than an unmated adult. Many individuals will actually die of grief if their mate dies, and survivors almost never form new bonds afterwards. This can be a problem for males, as males live an average of fifty years longer than females, who themselves live an average of 150-160 years. Harsh hormonal and biological fluctuations in the females are the culprit.

H. unlikelus is a naturally shy and vulnerable species, who do everything they can to avoid injury or conflict. This comes as no surprise considering their hollow bones, air sac systems, and delicate breathing mechanism make them quite susceptible to injury. Sharp, barbed quills on the back of the head, breasts, and backs help deter attackers from targeting their vulnerable areas. Because of this, they are far behind humans in terms of advanced weaponry, combat, and military. They, however, are far more advanced in medicine and agriculture, and are extremely environmentally conscious. They also are the first non-magical species to realm jump, something that is almost impossible even for most semimagical and magical species and beings. Because of this and the influence of other advanced species (such as humans), their technology has advanced at a much quicker pace, and they may even be starfaring soon. H. unlikelus has now been realm jumping for over a hundred and twenty years.

[Somewhat] brief overview of Eeloks: (You'll have to forgive me if I get anything wrong with the Eeloks, feel free to correct me.)
Eeloks on the other hand are an extraterrestrial species, native to the planet Plong. Despite being extraterrestrial in origin, they strongly resemble tetrapodian Chiroptera (bats) and marsupials and even follow the basic tetrapodian formula. Both sexes stand about two feet (~60.96 cm) tall on average. Like the pteranosimians they are wing walkers, but are built more for ground movement than climbing, having two wing fingers fused into hooves. This makes them much more efficient at running, but makes grasping almost impossible, and thus makes them poor climbers. Communication, vocalization, and echolocation are highly advance in both species, and in the Eeloks their hearing and smell of Eeloks are superb. Both senses far surpasses that of Humans and H. unlikelus, although the latter have superior eyesight. Both sexes are furry, with the male having a large fur "Mohawk" on the head and along the back, whereas females have a pouch on the abdomen.

Like H. unlikelus they are a delicate species, and are a very peaceful race as a result. Eeloks bear young like that of marsupials; young are born prematurely and crawl upwards into the females pouch, and remain there until about two Plong years. Females have a posterior* facing pouch that their young are reared in, which closes off while the young are still small*. Interestingly, Eeloks have a primitive airsac system, and some of the long bones are hollow, although not as extensively as the pteranosimians. This helps them take in a high level of oxygen and also allows the bones to be stronger while not needing to be inherently thick. It does NOT make either party lighter, however, aside form allowing the bones to be thinner. Air within the wings/S.A.S.S actually increases their weight despite popular belief.

Eeloks are highly advanced technologically speaking, and as far as space travel are leaps and bounds ahead of H. unlikelus. Interdimensional travel has also been achieved, and so they can travel to any of the realm's native dimensions. They however are not yet capable of true realm jumping, and can only travel within their native realm. Despite their peaceful nature, Eeloks have developed moderately advanced weaponry. Because of their delicate nature, most weaponry is projectile bashed, as hand to hand combat can be too intense for them. Aside from spacecraft, transportation also includes large multi-passenger vehicles (buses, aircraft, ships, etc) and cargo vessels (cargo ships, cargo planes, etc). Like H. unlikelus, Eeloks are capable of flying where they need to go for the most part, so single passenger/small transport vehicles are not needed.

*again, this is speculation based on aerodynamics and the given anatomy, please feel free to correct it if need be

I do plan on coloring this, along with several other things in storage, so stay tuned.

Eeloks belong to WorldBuildersInc, H. unlikelus and The Pterraforming Project belong to me.

When pterosimians run, do they have a rotary gallop? Or do they mimic ratites?Except with their arms of course.
